5 STEPS TO AUSSIE SUN SAFETY

It’s no secret that us Aussies love the sun – and for good reason! Vitamin D is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle but so is staying safe while soaking in the rays.

Sunscreen is just one part of the five steps in arming yourself against the tough Aussie sun and with Summer just around the corner, we thought why not give you all a little reminder about the other four.

1. Apply liberally

There are many things in our world that we apply the moderation rule to. A little chocolate, a can of your favourite soft drink, or a cheeky ice cream on a hot summer day – these are all things that we can enjoy in moderation… But sunscreen certainly isn’t one of them!

Studies show that Australian’s simply don’t apply enough sunscreen to give them the proper protection they need to stay sun safe. It is recommended that you use at least 7 teaspoons per application of sunscreen. That’s right, 7 teaspoons!

2. The 20-minute rule

As hard as it may be to spend all that time applying your sunscreen before you run outside or into the surf, remember the 20-minute rule.

Sunscreen, in all forms, including after re-application, needs time to soak in and dry to give you the best results possible. Why spend all that time making sure you’ve covered every nook and cranny, just to jump into the pool right after!

3. Re-apply

Now, we’re sure you’ve heard this one before! Although some tubes and bottles may say that they are 4-hours water or sweat resistant, we’re here to tell you they’re lying.

It is vital that after swimming, sweating, or using a towel you are reapplying your sunscreen every two hours – or more often if you the UV is forecast to be high. You better believe you should be re-applying three times!

4. Cover up

As annoying as it may seem, sunscreen is only one part in becoming the sun-safe warrior, you are!

Arming yourself with a long-sleeved shirt, some stylish sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat are the best weapons in the toolkit in our opinion!

5. Keep it cool

As fun as backyard cricket or a splash in the surf may be, staying out of the suns harshest UV rays between 10am and 3pm is the final step in protecting yourself.

Seeking a cool, shady spot to relax and kick back with your family and friends is the central to staying sun-safe this summer – and all year round!
