MYTHBUSTING WITH TUBIES

Have you ever caught yourself thinking is that really true? When hearing a ‘fact’ about sun protection… because we have!

Sun safety is one of those topics that everyone has an opinion about but sometimes those opinions – that are passed off as fact – can be detrimental to you and your families health.

This is why all of us here at Tubies, have decided to give these myths (AKA lies) a serious debunk! Here are 4 of the craziest, most common sun safety ‘myths’ to leave the mouths of others.

1. You can’t get sunburnt in the shade

This one is by far the most ridiculous and common mistakes Aussies make. Sunburn and sun damage is caused by overall exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays. UV radiation can be found even in the shadiest of spots, so don’t think you’ve got the sun fooled! A cool, overcast day in Winter can do the same amount of damage as the summer sun if you’re not careful!

Tubies tip: Cloudy days can sometimes be more harmful as UV radiation penetrates some clouds and reflects off them and onto you!

2. Sunscreen isn’t necessary if you’re wearing make up

Although some cosmetics may provide an SPF15, it is necessary for individuals to wear additional SPF underneath – especially if you plan on being in the sun for an extended amount of time. In most cases, cosmetics don’t provide any sun protection so don’t confuse covering blemishes with sun protection!

3. Skin cancer is always visible

Now this one may shock you a little… Yes, you can get skin cancer in areas that never see the sun! Many Australians believe that they’ll be able to see a skin cancer and be aware of any changes in moles, spots, or freckles but that’s not always the case. Think underarms, between your toes, and for those wanting to know… Yes, even on your genitals!

4. You can reapply SPF50+ less than SPF30+

A classic case of misunderstanding. As deceiving as it may be, sunscreen (no matter the SPF) can be used to extend your fun in the sun! But 30+ and 50+ are different numbers? Yes, this may be true however, it all has to do with the percentage of UV rays blocked by the sunscreen. SPF30 filters approximately 96% of UV radiation, whereas SPF50+ filters around 98%. With that being said, whether you’re wearing 30 or 50+ reapplication is still needed every 2 hours!
